Yes I just heard it on the radio and then they played 'Teenage Kicks' by the Undertones, which was always John Peel's favourite song in his legendary Festive Fifty chart. He was a part of my life and I will miss him not being on the radio. I was lucky enough to be in the back of his car for an interview of him by John Petrie after a gig at Edinburgh Unversity back in 1984. He was with Sheila and he talked about curries, Aberdeen football club, (Simon) 'Bates', and music of course. He was just the same with us as was on the radio; genuine and modest.

I heard on the radio yesterday lunchtime. I forget what work bollocks I was up to but I remember being shocked at what a short statement it was. "Radio presenter John Peel died this morning"--one of those short statements like the first line of _The Stranger_ : Today Mom died.
Not growing up in the UK, I got to know Peel through the Sessions and the first real memory of him taking a place in my life was when _Doolittle_ made his top album of the year--what was that--1989?
Robbie of course is always 50% cooler than the next guy;-) Tell you what Rob, I just figured he had to be a top guy and would have expected him to behave as you describe.
It's funny, I've always seen some sort of alter-ego thing going on between Billy and John Peel. Something about the incessant hunger for music combined with that attitude--I'm pretty sure neither John nor Billy ever had an evil thought about anyone (apart form the fun stuff of course).
